Elderly woman dies in hospital after being struck by a vehicle

On April 11, 2021 at approximately 8:00 pm, the San Luis Police Department received calls of a vehicle accident involving a pedestrian that took place by Merrill Avenue and Villa Street. San Luis police officers responded to the location and upon arrival located an unconscious elderly female laying on the ground who had been struck by a vehicle. San Luis police officers identified the male driver involved as 26 year old Vicente Torres Sandoval from San Luis, Arizona. The female victim was later identified as 80 y/o Maria Leal, a resident of San Luis, Mexico. Mrs. Leal was transported to YRMC and later flown to a Phoenix hospital with head trauma where she later died of her injuries. Mr. Torres-Sandoval was booked into the Yuma County Jail for driving under the influence and a charge of vehicular manslaughter was added to his charges.
