Honor Guard

The San Luis Police Department Honor Guard is a volunteer assignment comprised of four sworn officers. The Honor Guard’s primary responsibility is to honor law enforcement officers by attending police funerals.

Other duties include representing the Department at public events, memorial services and special requests from community groups. The Honor Guard reflects the highest traditions of law enforcement; professionalism, integrity, dignity and respect at the following events:

  • Memorial Services
  • Parades
  • Special events on request

Chief of Police

Nigel Reynoso

Chief Nigel Reynoso was born in San Luis, Mexico and has been a resident of San Luis, Arizona since 1988. He has served the community as a Police Officer for the City of San Luis Police Department since 2005.

Chief Reynoso has commanded all divisions of the San Luis Police Department including Patrol, Support Services, and Administration as a Police Lieutenant.

Chief Reynoso is a graduate of Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command and the University of Phoenix with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration. He is also a graduate of the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) Leadership Program (ALP) Session 21 and has completed the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association’s leadership schools and has achieved the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Award.

Chief Reynoso serves as a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Arizona Association of Chief of Police, and the Yuma County Drugs & Delinquency Coalition. Chief Reynos is a United States Marine Corps Veteran.

Lieutenant

Alan Guevara

Lieutenant Alan Guevara started his journey with the San Luis Police Department in 2000 as a Police Explorer. Then, in 2004 he was hired as an SLPD Communications Officer, where he trained new Communications Officers. The San Luis Police Department selected Lieutenant Guevara to attend the Arizona Western College Law Enforcement Training Academy in 2010. He graduated in 2011 and was transferred into a Police Officer position.

Lieutenant Guevara was promoted from Officer to Corporal in 2014, and from Corporal to Sergeant in 2018, all within the Patrol Division, where he supervised several patrol squads, including the Crime Suppression Unit. While in the Patrol Division, he also served as the Volunteer Program Coordinator, Reserve Program Liaison and assisted in the Citizens Academy. In 2019, Lieutenant Guevara was transferred to the Support Services Division as the Detective Sergeant, where he supervised the Detective’s Section, the Evidence Section, the Liaison Unit, and the department logistics. Lt. Guevara holds a bachelor’s degree of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University. In 2023, he was promoted to Lieutenant in the Support Services Division.

Lieutenant Guevara has several certifications and trainings, such as AZ POST Field Training Officer, Firearms and Rifle Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Basic SWAT Training, Threat Liaison Officer Training, AXON Body Worn Camera Instructor, Pepper Ball Instructor, Physical Fitness Instructor, and Advanced Incident Command Training. Lieutenant Guevara has also written and been awarded multiple grants on behalf of the San Luis Police Department.
Lieutenant Guevara has commanded the Support Services Division and is currently the Patrol Division Lieutenant.

Sergeant

Ernesto Cardenas

Sergeant Cardenas graduated from Arizona Western College in 2012. He then became an Officer with the San Luis Police Department that same year. Since coming to work at the San Luis Police Department, Sergeant Cardenas has received many certifications and trainings. He is a certified General Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Rifle Instructor, less lethal instructor, High Risk Vehicle Stop Instructor, Taser Instructor, and American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid and CPR instructor. He has also received Stop the Bleed training, Drug Interdiction training. Sergeant Cardenas is a State of Arizona certified phlebotomist and Drug Recognition Expert, and a member of the SLPD Honor Guard.

Sergeant Cardenas has trained with many different agencies throughout his law enforcement career. He has worked with and received training from the United States Marshals Service, FEMA, and the Department of Homeland Security. He previously served as a K9 Unit Officer and was recognized as the 2018 K9 Officer of the Year.
Before his promotion, Sergeant Cardenas served as a patrol and canine officer to the patrol division, where he gained extensive investigative experience. In addition, Sergeant CARDENAS has completed SWAT School in Lake Havasu, Arizona.

In his leadership role, Sergeant Cardenas is a certified HGN/SFST technician/ instructor, attended the advanced DUI training course, and actively participates in DUI abatements and STEP details.

Sergeant

Emmanuel Aldama

Sergeant Emmanuel Aldama was born in Yuma, Arizona. Sergeant Aldama graduated from the Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy (ALEA) in Phoenix, Arizona, and has served the community as a Police Officer for the City of San Luis Police Department since 2014.

Sergeant Aldama is a graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Criminology. Sergeant Aldama’s previous assignments have included serving as a detective in the Criminal Investigation Division, a K9 handler within the Patrol Division, and a Task Force Officer assigned to the United States Marshal’s Office fugitive apprehension division.

Sergeant Aldama became a certified use-of-force analyst after graduating from the Force Science Institute. Sergeant Aldama is a Forensic Phlebotomist, a trained interviewer for sex crimes, and a current sniper within the department, and a member of the SLPD Honor Guard.

Sergeant Aldama is a General Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Rifle Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, High-Risk Vehicle Stops Instructor, High-Threat Vehicle Engagement Instructor, and a Glock/Rifle armorer.

Sergeant Aldama is currently assigned to the Patrol Division of the San Luis Police Department.

Sergeant Aldama is serving in the United States Army National Guard.
