The San Luis Police Department is offering a Citizens’ Police Academy to our Spanish speaking community. Academy organizers are currently accepting applications at the SLPD station located at 1030 E. Union Street in San Luis, AZ.
The Citizens’ Academy is an eight week program designed to give members of the community an inside look at local law enforcement. During the Academy, participants will be introduced to a variety of topics to give them an overview of the SLPD’s function and operational procedures. Graduates from the Academy are encouraged to continue their involvement with the San Luis Police Department by becoming a member of our Volunteers Program. The Volunteer Program is designed to have uniformed citizen volunteers perform routine police functions to help the department provide quality law enforcement service to our community.
Participants in the Citizens’ Academy are selected by the Citizens’ Academy Committee through an application process. Enrollment is limited to thirty students. Potential candidates must meet the following criteria:
• Must be a minimum of 18 years of age;
• Must be a Citizen or legal resident of the United States;
• Must have NO felony convictions;
• Must have no misdemeanor convictions within one year of application; and
• Must complete and turn in application by August 24th, 2016
The Citizens’ Academy curriculum will include crime scene investigations, accident investigations, traffic control, the use of canines, radio operation; community oriented policing philosophy and many other interesting topics. Classes will be held Thursday night from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM beginning on September 1st and ending on October 20th, 2016 at the San Luis Police Department.
