The San Luis Police Department (SLPD) is proud to announce the implementation of a new Annual Physical Fitness Assessment Program for all sworn personnel. This proactive approach highlights the department’s ongoing commitment to officer wellness, readiness, and the safety of the community we serve.
The Annual Physical Fitness Assessment will be a requirement for every SLPD officer, from entry-level to the Chief of Police, starting in February 2026. This initiative is intended to help SLPD sworn personnel maintain the physical capabilities necessary to perform the essential duties of law enforcement. The assessment mirrors the entry-level applicant fitness test and evaluates both dynamic strength and cardiovascular fitness.
Officers will replicate the essential physical demands required as a peace officer, such as sprinting, climbing, jumping over obstacles, carrying or dragging up to 165 pounds, and running up a flight of stairs. These measures are designed to uphold the SLPD’s standard of excellence and ensure that officers remain physically capable of the demands needed to protect the community with agility, endurance, and resilience.
In addition to the physical fitness assessments, the SLPD is offering its officers the opportunity to participate in Comprehensive Medical Examinations and Evaluations through a partnership with HeartFit for Duty, a provider specializing in cardiac, cancer, and metabolic health, as well as prevention and wellness programs for high-risk professions such as law enforcement. These exams are department-funded and confidential.
By integrating medical evaluations with physical assessments, the SLPD seeks to promote a culture of wellness, prevention, and longevity within the force. This investment in our officers’ health not only empowers them to monitor their well-being, identify potential risks early, and seek appropriate follow-up care, but also strengthens our department’s ability to serve the people of the City of San Luis with excellence.
